During my last consulting role for Nestle Coffee Partners/Starbucks, I became obsessed with creating coffee that could be consumed all day. On one hand, people use coffee to start their day, but little is consumed beyond noon. On the other hand, consumers wanted their coffee to provide relaxation benefits as well. All Day Coffee owes it to goats for its existence. Legend has it an Ethiopian goat herder named Kaldi noticed the berries his goats ate gave them unusual energy and kept them up at night. Monks confirmed his observation and began using the berries to enhance evening prayer. As word spread, the first coffeehouses were born.
For this reason, Portland's Belmont Goats have our affection and support. In 2012, they began occupying vacant blocks near SE 11th and Belmont streets. In 2015, the grocer Market of Choice moved in, and the goats moved to Lents. To commemorate the goats, Market of Choice affectionately referred to those blocks as 'The Goat Blocks' with outside sculptures and garage door etchings of goats.
